چکیده

In recent years the concept of emergence has gained much attention as ICT systems have started exhibiting properties usually associated with complex systems. Although emergence creates many problems for engineering complex ICT systems by introducing undesired behaviour, it also offers many possibilities for advance in the area of adaptive self-organizing systems. However, at the moment the inability to predict and control emergent phenomena prevents us from exploring its full potential or avoiding problems in existing complex systems. Towards this end, 370 O. Paunovski, G. Eleftherakis, A. Cowling this paper proposes a framework for empirical study of complex systems exhibiting emergence. The framework relies on agent-oriented modelling and simulation as a tool for examination of specific manifestations of emergence. The main idea is to use an iterative simulation process in order to build a coarse taxonomy of causal relationships between the microand macro layers. In addition to the detailed description of the framework, the paper also discusses the corresponding verification and validation processes as important factor for the success of such a study.

A framework for designing multi-level emergence

This thesis describes a framework for designing emergent behaviour. The framework is comprised of a simulation architecture, a rule migration process, and a rule combination language. Desired emergent behaviour is specified using a multi-level model which describes the behaviour at the appropriate level in the emergence hierarchy, using downward causation if appropriate. The rule migration proc...

Multi-agent Environment Exploration with AR.Drones

This paper describes work on a framework for multi-agent research using low cost Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV’s). In the past this type of research has required significant investment for both the vehicles themselves and the infrastructure necessary to safely conduct experiments. We present an alternative solution using a robust, low cost, off the shelf platform. We demonstrate the capabilities o...

Voltage Coordination of FACTS Devices in Power Systems Using RL-Based Multi-Agent Systems

This paper describes how multi-agent system technology can be used as the underpinning platform for voltage control in power systems. In this study, some FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) devices are properly designed to coordinate their decisions and actions in order to provide a coordinated secondary voltage control mechanism based on multi-agent theory. Each device here is modeled as ...

Detection and Classification of Emergent Behaviors Using Multi-agent Simulation Framework (wip)

In recent years the concept of emergence has captured significant attention in the field of complex systems. However, the inability to predict and control emergent phenomena prevents us from exploring its full potential. The research effort in this paper focuses on exploring emergent behaviors by proposing a framework for analysis of systems that exhibit such behaviors. The framework provides a...

Collaborative Evolutionary Planning Framework (EPF) for Route Planning

This research presents a collaborative evolutionary planning framework for large scale grid exploration and planning problems. It caters for both dynamic and unknown environments using evolutionary techniques. In addition, we integrate the exploration and planning process in a unified framework using multi agent system. As a proof of success, we have developed extensive simulations with realist...
